The novel was brilliant, and the serial was good too. One of the friends wants to meet others and relive the nostaligic past, how this happens is the rest of the story. Tholaindhu pOnavargaL was a sa.kandhasamy novel, based on 4 schoolmates who grow apart and end up in different social strata. there was another serial called 'tholaindhu ponavargal' and 'neela maala' which were also very famous. I happened to watch the re-telecast of 'ivala en manaivi' and 'iravil oru pagal' in some channel 3 years back and I was wondering how did I really love these serials.DD has really given good serials those days like these 3. This serial also had a decent title song, but was not as good as 'rayil sneham'. Another famous serial at that time was 'Ivala en Manaivi' starring chitra,sarath babu and nizhalgal ravi. 'Aasai nilave' was by jayachandran and not by KJY i guess. Iravil oru pagal was a good thriller to watch at that time, the rajamma character was played by sukumari and we used to count the days for the next episode. (i remember only bits and pieces of this one) though she would have been molested by someone else. I think the heroine will live with nizhalgal ravi and they would act as husband and wife. it had the KB's directorial touch (as my dad would say) and had the usual 'muranpadugal' that KB is famous for. Rail sneham though being slow was really a good serial during those days. This was followed by the drab and dismal Shakti-90!!ĭD lost its charm after that, a few YG Mahendran appearances nothwithstanding. On Thu 730, from Oct 89, there was Akilan Chittirapaavai, again running to packed audiences.
IOP was a big hit(remember the KJY number 'Aasai Nilave, Pesum Kanave'.and also the 'Salim, Mohammmmmmmmed Salim character!!) and RS did fall in its shadow for a while. I guess Rail Sneham was a Wednesday 730 starrer that followed 'Iravil Oru Pagal' starring Revathi, Suresh Menon, Charlie, 'Rajamma'(? that ubiquitous Malayali old lady).
I was moving to class 9 then and the story didnt make much news during the lunch break then.main reason being the wave of good serials during that period. Title song was catchy but screenplay did move slowly befitting a TV serial in sharp contrast to KB's pulsating style of screenplay for the celluloid screen. YGM, KB could have opted to wait little longer to get Sivakumar himself after his 'aNNaamalai' assignment is over. Vocalist Anuradha Suresh Krishnamoorthi plays Suhasini's role. We are also getting only Sun tv here:( I think Sindhu-Bhairavi part-2 will be on Jaya TV, after KB's Anni gets over.
